"Haryana: All India Kisan Congress Leads Protest March in Charkhi Dadri to Voice Demands"

With Haryana Assembly elections just a few months away, farmer agitation is rekindling at the Punjab-Haryana border. Some farmer unions are rallying support for a march to Delhi to advocate for their long-standing demands, including a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Following the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s directive for the Haryana government to reopen the Shambhu border, the unions leading the ‘Delhi Chalo March’ are now awaiting the Supreme Court’s decision on the Haryana government’s petition. The border had been closed in February to block the movement of protesting farmers from Punjab into Haryana.

Sarwan Singh Pandher of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee said, "We are awaiting the Supreme Court's decision on the Shambhu border. Once the orders are issued, we will convene to devise our strategy. We are not optimistic about the committee proposed by the Supreme Court."

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court proposed that Punjab and Haryana form a committee to address farmers' issues, noting a significant “trust issue” between the governments and the farming community.

This development has energized farmers, who are now planning a multi-faceted strategy to renew their 'Delhi Chalo March' call, especially as Haryana approaches its Assembly elections in the next three months.

The ruling BJP in Haryana faces increasing challenges due to recent backlash from farmers, notably the Jat community, which contributed to their loss of five out of ten Lok Sabha seats in the recent elections. Many of these losses were in rural areas, and even in urban constituencies, the party's victory margins have significantly decreased.

After this setback, the BJP appears to recognize that alienating the farming community could jeopardize its chances in the upcoming Assembly polls. In response, the state government has launched a farmer outreach program to counteract the political damage and bolster its support in rural areas where Congress has gained strength. The Jat community, which dominates 40 of the 90 Assembly seats, plays a crucial role in this political landscape.
