Assistant Director Sandeep Singh Yadav of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) faces arrest for allegedly accepting a Rs 20 lakh bribe from a jeweller based in Mumbai.
CBI's Mumbai unit caught the accused red-handed while receiving the bribe in the national capital, leading to their immediate arrest.
Bullion company owner Vipul Thakkar filed a complaint with the CBI against ED officers Sandeep Singh and another official from Unit-1, alleging wrongdoing. Following an initial investigation, the CBI verified the claims and found sufficient evidence to support the allegations, deeming them prima facie true.
Following searches at Vipul Harish Thakkar's premises on August 3 and 4, the CBI investigation revealed that ED Assistant Director Sandeep Singh Yadav allegedly extorted Rs 25 lakh from Thakkar by threatening to arrest his son if the demand wasn't met.
According to officials, the initial demand of Rs 25 lakh was later reduced to Rs 20 lakh following negotiations between the two parties. However, after paying the bribe, Thakkar reported the incident to the CBI, prompting an investigation
"The ED has registered a case against Sandeep Singh, Assistant Director at the ED, under the PMLA and carried out search operations at his residence. A joint search was also conducted at his office by both the ED and CBI. This action follows the FIR and subsequent arrest of Sandeep Singh by the CBI," stated the ED in a post on X.
