Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will visit Pune on Monday to assess the city's flood situation in light of the recent heavy rains. During his visit, the Chief Minister will hold meetings with officials to discuss emergency measures and relief efforts. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall in various districts of western Maharashtra for Monday.
Notably, Pune is experiencing a flood-like situation after 45,000 cusecs of water were released from the Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha river basin on Sunday evening.
The irrigation department has decided to reduce the water release from the Khadakwasla Dam to 65 percent in response to the weather body's warning.
In the district, at least two Army columns, along with rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the fire department, and Pune Municipal Corporation, have been mobilized.
The Chief Minister has instructed authorities to remain vigilant and, if necessary, evacuate residents to safer areas with the assistance of the NDRF, SDRF, and the Army.
Two NDRF teams have been deployed in Balewadi, Pune, and Chinchwad due to the heavy rains. Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations have issued flood warnings for low-lying areas because of the ongoing release of water from nearly all dams in the Pune district on Sunday.
Continuous water release is occurring from several dams, including Khadakwasla, Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet, Pavana, Mulshi, and Bhatghar, compounded by heavy rainfall in the catchment areas. Residents of Baner, Sinhagad Road, Warje, Dandekarpul, Patil Estate Slums, and other nearby areas are advised to take precautions.
Despite the situation, all schools and colleges in Pune will operate as usual on Monday, with officials stating that the situation in the district is under control.
