Maharashtra Government Announces Financial Aid and Safety Measures Following Badlapur School Assault

State Provides Financial Assistance to Victims' Families
In the wake of a distressing sexual assault incident at a school in Badlapur, the Maharashtra government has stepped forward to support the affected families. On Monday, officials announced financial aid to help mitigate the impact of the tragedy. The family of one of the victims will receive ₹10 lakh through the Women and Child Development Department, while the family of another four-year-old student will be granted ₹3 lakh. In addition, the Education Department has pledged to fund both girls' education up to the graduation level.
Accountability and Action Taken
School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar disclosed these measures during a media briefing. He emphasized that the state government is taking serious steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. Actions have been taken against officials deemed responsible for the incident, including the suspension of Principal Archana Athawale, who was accused of withholding information during the investigation. Kamini Gaikar and Nirmala Ghure have also been named as co-accused.
“The investigation revealed significant lapses, and appropriate action is being taken,” Kesarkar said. He assured that the inquiry will continue and that the government is committed to enhancing safety measures within schools.
New Safety Initiatives
To bolster school safety and child protection, several new measures are being implemented. The government plans to install CCTV cameras in schools and maintain video records for up to 15 days. The introduction of self-defense training programs is already halfway through, and a comprehensive government order on the matter will be issued soon.
Kesarkar also outlined future initiatives, including the proposal for panic buttons in every school, which will be put forward to the Home Department. Additionally, a help center will be established at the education commissionerate in Pune, with contact numbers to be made available to schools across the state.
Commitment to Improved Child Protection
These steps underscore the Maharashtra government’s commitment to addressing school safety and preventing such incidents. By providing financial support to the victims' families and implementing robust safety measures, the state aims to reinforce its dedication to protecting children and ensuring a safer educational environment.
